Abject Fruit: Pineapple – Anouska Leyens, City & Guilds of London Art School
Polystyrene with Flocking & Ceramic Cones / 140 x 80 x 60cm
Resembling plants and fruit, the aim of these pieces is to make the familiar seem uneasy, exploring themes of the uncanny and the abject. I made these pieces by carving polystyrene into an abstract shape and piercing the surface with brightly coloured objects. ‘Pineapple’ has been flocked and pierced with individually moulded ceramic cones painted blue. These works initially appear plush, attractive and inviting, but can evoke a growing feeling of horror or repulsion when the juxtaposing surface and inverted overwhelming colours are explored.
