Holding On by Jane Verran, Perth
Wood, oil paints, enamel and plaster
The artworks are investigations of the confronting issues to do with death that are within our contemporary culture. I investigate how the individual prepares them self for the worst and hope for the best when a love one is dying? There is a point when the dying will give up hope and begin to look for inner peace.
This painting was inspired by a very emotional point in a hospital; it was clear my mother’s cancer had spread to her lungs and they were filling with blood. As she was getting worst the option became limited for her treatment, at this point she became acceptant of her fate. As she began to let go, it was though around her that were still holding onto the hope she would get better.
