Serpula by Lucy McMillan, Melbourne
Digital photo print (coloured plastic and face paint) / 80 x 119 cm
Lucy McMillan imagines alien species, drawing inspiration from animals that are strange and unfamiliar. Serpula is loosely based off a genus of marine worms of the same name (also known as tube worms or fan worms). These worms can be found in all types of marine environments, withstanding extreme temperatures and the pressure of great depths. They are bound to a rock by a calcium tube that they secrete. Unable to move, they must catch their prey as it passes.
