Middle – Ying Zou, California College of the Arts
Paint on wood board / 60 x 39 x 1
Ying Zou’s wall pieces, Stuck and Middle, depict Chinese characters in a minimalist form. A saw blade “stuck” in the center of “up” and “down”, while a pendulum swings, landing in the center of “middle”. Using language as a representation of both symbolic and formal meaning, the works reveal the displacement: their illegibility leaves them bereft of identity and searching for meaning.
