I am currently exploring the notion that identity, rather than being fixed or easily categorised, is a complex and dynamic amalgamation of layers and fragments of our experiences, memories and cultural and environmental influences. Abstraction has the potential to obscure typical identifiers such as ethnicity and gender, and my work involves linking ideas of complexity and fluidity with painting methodology such as pouring, layering and mark-making. The painting compositions are informed by self portrait drawings and collages based on colours and textures derived from my varying cultural and environmental experiences.
