Untitled Nina Simone – Luc Nonga, City & Guilds of London Art School
Oil on Canvas
306 x 214cm
The work evolves around the subject of “Otherness” and is inspired by what we experience on a daily basis. What we do to help shape our environment, and the sort of impact it creates.
Nina Simone, a songwriter, jazz singer, pianist and a civil right activist, is an inspiration to my painting and to my exploration of the subject matter. Growing up as a child she dealt with racism and responded to her sorrow through music. My work attempts to react to her words: ‘How can you be an artist and not reflect the time’.
Cameroonian by birth, I moved to London at the age of 14 (following my mother) with limited command of English or understanding of British ‘culture’. For a long time I felt alienated. These experiences feed into and drive my work and my practice acts as a conduit for me to engage with my environment and history.
